Game overview
In Above and Below you are going to build a new village. You have found the ideal place where your new home is going to be. Once you have settled, you discover a whole world below the ground. In the game you are going to discover this world and build up your village.
Every player is going to build his own village and will expand that village using the help of villagers. These are people who all have unique abilities and can help you with building above the ground, training new villagers and harvest resources.
But, there is also a complete world below the surface that you can discover in the game. You can sent a minimum of 2 villagers to go on an adventure. You get a card and throw the dice, the number of the dice corresponds with a number on the card, and that is the scenario that you will play. There is a scenario book, and this is where the story telling scenario comes in. At the end of your story/scenario you make a choice, and that choice determines how many latterns you need to succeed the story.
If you succeed the story, you add a cave to your village, that allows you to build a village later in the game.
By collecting (different) goods and building buildings you score points at the end of the game, after seven rounds. The player with the most points wins the game.

Letβs keep it simple: this game is really great!
The combination of town-building and storytelling works very well in this game. During the seven rounds you are building up your village, and the adjustment of the underground adventures really works well in our opinion.
You need villagers, with all unique qualities, to build your villages. This requires choices how to assign your villagers and resources. During the rounds you recruit more villagers and going underground will get more easier and successful.
The replay ability is almost endless. The storybook has over 200 stories, there are 25 cave cards, more cards then you can play in a game. For each card you throw a dice, that connects with a story in the book, and with each scenario you have multiple options to go for. We really enjoy this, and it is very surprising and unique everything we play.
Also, every villager is unique and brings other possibilities.
Reviewing at the components and the quality of the game we can only say that it looks very good. The items and artwork match well together and it matches the feeling of the story.
We experience this game as very balanced and peaceful. The game has a lot of possibilities but doesnβt give stress or tension. It builds up very well during the rounds.
We believe this game is suitable for people who have some experience with boardgames , even though the game plays very smoothly there are multiple choices to make and in our opinion this is better so oversee by experienced players.
And, all the stories are in English, so the game requires English reading and understanding.
