Gameplay

In Sobek, a new pyramid is built on the river to worship the God Sobek. In all the activity a large market has sprung up where you and your opponent are trying to start trading. The player who manages to do this the smartest wins the game. It seems slim to play it fair, but corruption is lurking and it can pay out to follow the path of corruption.

Sobek is a 2 player game where you score points by collecting sets of goods. All kinds of goods are open on the market. There are also several traders in the game that each have special equipment. The traders are face down in the market so you can’t yet see which trader, with the corresponding effect, it is.

On your turn, you perform 1 of three actions. You can take a tile from the market. You can grab stands that are horizontal, vertical or diagonal from the ankhpion that is on the board. The tile you take chooses how the next turn will be. If you choose to take a tile, you may take the tile closest to the ankphion. However, if you prefer a tile that is further away in that line, you can also take it. Only then the tiles you skip will end on your corruption pile. It’s your choice whether it’s worth it or not.

The second action you can do is play a character from your hand, using the special action. Finally, you can also choose to sell a set and put it in front of you. A set consists of at least three tiles of the same good. Sets will score points at the end of the game. You score points by multiplying the number of tiles of a type by the scarabs in your set. The player with the most points at the end of the game wins the game.

Review

Sobek is a really fun 2-player game. It’s just a little different from other 2-player games. You are going to collect your goods and trade them as well as possible. Because you can only take tiles in 1 direction, the temptation of corruption is always lurking.

The game is very accessible and plays smoothly, but especially towards the end of the game, it will be a little more strategic because you have to look carefully at which tiles you want and which tiles you do not want your opponent to take.

The characters in the game will give it a surprising twist every time.

Are you looking for a fun and accessible 2 player game, with sufficient depth and challenge, then this is definitely recommended.

βž– For expert players, this is a fun filler game, but after a few games it offers less of a challenge.
