Game Overview

In Animals Gathering, the player is placed in the role of a mage whose goal is to bring animals to life in a world where all animals have become extinct. The game starts with choosing a unique magician card with a special ability that will help you throughout the game. This can be, for example, that you can roll a dice again, or that you influence the choice of the dice that remain for your fellow players.

You also choose one of the three animal cards to start with. The goal is to collect magical stones and use them to bring the animals to life.

The game offers the players a choice between taking an animal from the market or rolling the dice to get magical stones. Each die offers different shapes of stones, which can be placed on an animal card. So you have to choose your dice carefully to increase the chance of getting the right shapes. If a player fills an animal card after placing a shape, it is brought to life and often provides player with permanent or one-time benefits.

On your turn, you roll the dice. You can use all the shapes you throw if you can. The shapes that you cannot place on your animal cards are available to all your fellow players. They may place as many shapes as they can.

The game ends once a player has brought five animals to life, at which point points are awarded to the player based on the animals brought to life or based on the end effects of the game. The player with the most points wins the game.

Review

First of all, the beautiful artwork in combination with the colorful shapes should be mentioned. This is really well done and makes the game visually attractive, the quality of the box and punch boards are also top quality.

The game has a simple set of rules that are easy for children to understand, yet contains enough tactics to keep advanced players interested. For example, the scoring mechanisms are quite tactical, so we have omitted them when we play with our children of about 8 years old.

Although it is a dice placement game, as a player you certainly have an influence on the game. With the smart choice of dice, as well as the right animal cards to score, the game requires tactical insight.

The accompanying spell cards, with a one-off unique action, also provide an extra dimension, which is also attractive for experienced players. Animals Gathering offers much more than meets the eye. It is a game that we love to play several times in a row and is suitable for both beginners and advanced players. It therefore certainly deserves a place in our collection and we recommend it to all board game enthusiasts.
