Gameplay

In Immunowars you are going to battle with several viruses and bacteria. You are going to infect your opponents with these viruses and try to survive the longest.

The unique story behind Immunowars is the scientific basis. All the symptoms of the diseases are real. There are a lot of different types of viruses, like Zika and Influenza and of course Covid is in the game.

In your turn you have three actions that you can execute. In short; you can draw cards or play cards. The maximum amount of cards allowed in your hand is seven, so you must be alert on this. There are different types of cards, like cards with the viruses and bacteria but also cards with equipment to protect yourself. There are also cards that cure a disease like a vaccine or an upgrade of your immune system. To make the game even more challenging there are several events that can happen during the game. There are general evens that effect all the players, like a nuclear disaster or a new pandemic, or specific events that only happen to the active player, like a hack of your file.

You have a number of health at the start of the game, that you can upgrade with playing equipment cards. If you have a disease because of a virus or bacteria your health goes down at the end of your turn. When your health is at 0,  you are out of the game and you lost. Besides health you also have a number of ATP (action points). Each rounds two points are added and you need these points to play cards or activate abilities on cards.

Review

The theme of this game is very strong and well executed. It is very clear that there is a lot of attention and research behind the infections and symptoms and other details in the game. It all makes sense and the artwork matches perfectly with the theme. The effects on the cards are well written, spot-on and to the point and clear. There is also a bit of (black) humor in it.

The game is very competitive and the goal is to bring as much trouble as you can to your opponents. Luckily there are enough cards in the game to defend yourself and the game feels competitive, but balanced.

The mechanism in the game is clear; each turn you have three actions, after you played the actions you resolve the active cards in front of you. There is a large diversity in the cards so the game is different everytime you play it. Because of the limited ATP, you need to make strategic decisions between attack and defence.

The mechism works well and the game plays quickly and smoothly. The choices you need to make are not too complicated, but have enough dept to feel very challenging.

The only minor for us, is the theme. As mentioned; the theme is executed very well and the detail on the cards and symptoms are very impressive. However, it felt very strange in the beginning to give your opponent some scary virus that might kill them. The black humor in the game makes it lighter, but we needed to get used to this β€œfeeling” in the beginning of the game.

If this does not bother you, you like a competitive card game with lot’s of strategic choices and dept we definitely recommend this game!

The game is also fun with two players, but becomes even more fun and challenging with 2+ players, because of the interaction with each other.

End Score

βœ”οΈ Very strong and well executed theme
