Gameplay

Name5 is a party game where you have to name five examples of a topic within a certain amount of time. The game has a very large pile of cards with five different subjects. There is also a (small) game board where you play against each other as teams. The team, or player, who is the first to reach the centre of the game board wins the game.

The rules are simple: roll the dice and move forward the number of squares. Draw a card and read the corresponding suit. You have half a minute to name five examples of this topic. If you get it right, you can throw again, if not, it’s the next turn.

When you reach the centre, the next challenge follows. You have 90 seconds to name five examples of a card of all five subjects. If that doesn’t work, it’s the next one’s turn. This continues until a player or a team has successfully completed the challenge. Then you won!

Review

The concept of the game is well thought out and feels like a real party game. A bit like 30 seconds. The subjects on the cards are really difficult, and that means that the game sometimes takes too long for us.

The challenge at the end of the game is just too much for us. You’ve played quite a few rounds before you get to the middle, and then have to guess all five topics in 90 seconds…we almost never managed to do that, and that feels a bit redundant.

We leave out that last phase when we play, which makes it a little shorter for us and that’s how it remains fun.

The topics on the cards are very diverse, and what we have done several times is take a stack of cards in the car and then try to name five examples of the topics without the game board. Success guaranteed!

If you like games like 30 seconds, and if you find it a challenge to come up with examples under time pressure, then this one is definitely worth checking out.
