GAMEPLAY
There is a world where dodos are riding dinos. There are four different worlds, with each different challenges. The king dies, and the dinos and dodos are racing to become the next king; or they fall into a volcano and they need to race to get out of the volcano, etc.
How to play?
The game contains four gameboards, with each an unique world with unique special abilities, and 12 different dodos on dinos, with each a special effect.
The players choose the board they are going to play, and the dino they will be racing with. You place the dino on start and take five cards in your hand.
You place the five special tokens (roll, egg, feather, meteorite and banana) in the middle of the board and the race starts! The dino who first reaches the finish, or crosses the finish the furthest wins the game.
π¦ Each round consists of two phases. The first phase is the scheming phase. In this phase each player selects the card they want to play in the next phase and place this card phase down in front of them. There are three types of cards
- Normal movement cards; these are the blue cards that create movement for your dino. Each card also contains a special effect.
- Aggressive movement cards; these are the red cards. These cards contain movement, but also have an special effect. His effect can have a negative effect on others or yourself.
- The reacton cards; these are the green cards. These cards can only be played in the running phase.
π¦ After all players selected their card and placed it face down on the table, all the player reveal their cards. If there are two, or more aggressive cards on the table those dinoβs get enraged and the effect on the aggressive cards is cancelled.
π¦ Then the running phase starts. Starting from the startplayer each player moves their dino and resolves the effect on the card. The reaction cards can also be played in this phase, as extra movement or to block an effect on a card.
π¦ What makes this race game unique, is the special effects on the cards. In the box are six tokens (roll, egg, feather, meteorite and banana) and these tokens are triggered by actions on the cards. Those tokens need to be thrown on the dinos. Each token has itβs own technique that needs to be used. And, it is surprisingly difficult.
π¦ The dino that crosses the finish as first, or the furthest wins the race.
π‘ OUR OPINION
We love this game! We are fans of games with the race mechanism, that makes is really competitive. Also, we love it when a game has beautiful artwork, great quality of the components and quick, simple rules to learn but difficult to master. And, this game meets all those criteriaβs.
First; the artwork and theme is amazing. Who does not love dodos and dinos, especially when they look so cute.
Second; The game is easy in rules, also easy to learn for unexperienced players. But it is not easy to master. Each cards has itβs own effects, and if you want you can play the game quite tactical. A single game costs about 20-30 minutes. A great filler game. There is also a challenging campaign mode, where you play all the four boards in a row and it takes about 1,5 β 2 hours.
Third; We love a unique twist in a game, and this one has it. Throwing the tokens is hilarious, but not uncomfortable. Each token has itβs own technique (like, with your elbow on the table and throwing with your wrist). Super fun and funny, and it happens incidentally in the game so it is not dominant in the gameplay. We love it.
In short; we recommend this game! It is challenging, fun and different. It is easy to play and to learn and also fun with less experienced players and children. Kids need to be able to read (English). It has enough variety and the unique gameplay makes it a very nice add on in the collection.
